CRAFTSMAN DESIGN

This design style originated in the early 20th century and is a classic Americana home design.  If you are looking for a style with character then this style is for you.  Craftsman features low and wide style and are often single story or story-and-a half-tall and have covered porches, hip or gabled roof and columns which add a charming detail, and natural materials like genuine stone masonry that give the exterior personality.

Beyond the classic Craftsman style, there are four types of Craftsman style homes.  The Prairie style, so-called because they are suitable for construction on flat plots of land.  They generally feature low pitch hip roofs. You can expect windows set in groups and secluded front entrances.  Reminiscent of Spanish Baroque Mission style homes originally were confined to the California Coastline but have become an increasingly common sight.  Due to their Spanish influence, they deviate from some more traditional aspects and use smooth stucco, red tile roofs, and open courtyard.  In the mid 1890’s to the late 1930’s, the Four-Square style became very popular.  They are identified by their signature square shape of both the exterior and interior rooms.  Typically, you will find 3 features in this style: Two-story, pyramidal hip roofs, and front porches spanning the entire width of the house.  Finally, the Bungalow originated in the Bengal region of India and typify the most popular features of Craftsman style home design.  Single-story construction with gabled or hipped style low pitched roofs extending over a front porch.

Common characteristics include covered porches, wide base columns, at least 2 dormers, emphasis on natural construction materials, particularly stone and timber accents, and open floor plans with bedrooms and bathrooms branching off the central living area.  Fireplaces are usually integrated within the living area and almost always are the centerpiece.  The interior generally carries the natural elements inside with natural wood beams that create a focal point.

Loaded with the character the Craftsman design is a real crowd pleaser.
